Netscape Multiple Email Account Setup for Mac

This procedure explains how to setup multiple accounts for Netscape Navigator (2.x or 3.x) running on a Macintosh:
Note: You must have Netscape Navigator 2.x or 3.x already installed and have launched it at least once (to create the default preferences).

1. Open your hard drive (usually the icon on the top right of the screen with either your name or Macintosh HD). Open the System Folder. Open the Preferences folder.

2. You will find a folder called Netscape f. Duplicate it (click on it once and select Duplicate under the File menu)

3. Rename the newly duplicated folder "Netscape f Copy" to "Netscape Jane Doe" replacing Jane Doe with the name of the person you are setting up.

4. Open this personalized Netscape folder, click on the Netscape Preferences file and select Make Alias under the File menu. Rename the alias "Netscape Jane Doe" replacing Jane Doe with the name of the person you are setting up.

5. Move this newly created alias into the Apple Menu Items folder located in the System Folder.

6. Click on the Apple menu and select the alias you just installed (Netscape Jane Doe). This will start Netscape using the preferences in the Netscape Jane Doe folder.

7. Under the Options menu select Mail and News Preferences and configure the settings according to the personalized information for that user.

  • IMPORTANT. Under the Servers Tab, the 4th line says Mail Directory, you MUST click on the Browse... button and select the Mail folder located in the Netscape Jane Doe folder you created earlier for that user so that his/her email messages are saved separately from the other users on this computer.
    1.

      8.  Quit Netscape (Quit under the File menu) to save those settings.

      9. Repeat steps 2 - 9 to setup other users.

Note: Users need to make sure that Netscape is NOT running before they select their name under the Apple menu for proper initialization of their settings. It is highly recommended to also select, under the Options menu, General Preferences, "Netscape Mail" as the "On Startup Launch" setting as it prevents some minor crashes.
