Getting the Program
Okay, you say... I have the website, but where do I get the program? We recommend any reliable, virus-free download site but the link provided will access http://www.download.com/pc/list/1,339,0-a-0-0-e-1,00.html?tag=st.dl..srch.list&search=cute+ftp&queryType=quicksearch . Feel free to use any other, such as shareware.com or tucows.com but please be sure to download "CuteFTP" as the screen shots seen here match the le version but differ slightly from the Pro version. Be sure to remember where the program is downloading to !
Setting Up to FTP
Once you have the program downloaded, you need to install it. Before installation, please remember to close all other programs, including your internet connection. As with any program, if you do not close all other programs, you will run the risk of corrupting the new or any other program on your system. Simply closing the programs for the installation will avoid this for you so always work on the side of caution with your computer.
The program has an installer that will walk you through the installation on your computer, simply read & follow the instructions there and the set up will be relatively simple.
Using the Program
The first time you go to use the program, you will need to set up the program to access your designated space with USAtek. Once this is done, you can save the information for use later, so the main concentration here is going to be getting it set up properly. Without the correct information in the right place, the program will not let you access USAtek.
Now that you have all the info, it is time to open the program & put the info in. Let's get started!Opening FTP
1) When you open CuteFTP, the first screen you will see is the FTP Site
Manager window. In this screen it is necessary to click on the button labeled
Add Site & can be seen below.
2) When the Add Host window opens, it will open to the General tab.
This is the window in which you will put all of the above information.
When you are finished it should look like the screen shown just below this
text.
3) Click on the OK button & you will see the screen change to the FTP Site Manager window again, but this time you will see a folder that matches whatever you named the site wehn you added all the pertinent information.
4) Once you have this screen, click on Connect
5) Once you click on Connect , you will be re-directed to another screen
& if you watch the top it will run through verifying your information.
If you entered any information incorrectly, this is where you will see
an error message. This screen can be seen below. Note that the left side
of the screen is the information on your own computer (also known as the
local system) & the right side is the remote system, also known as
your web space or where you want to send the files to.
You will want to locate your files on your computer first by using the down arrow on the right side of the box just below the info box, to the left side.
6) On the right side, or the remote system, you will notice a folder simply called www . This is the folder in which ALL of your web files must go in order to be able to let others view them on your web page. To open the 'www' folder, simply double click on the folder itself.
In order to be sure you are putting your files in the www folder, follow the image below to be sure the path name, shown in the on the right side below, shows home , followed by your username , followed by ' www '.
7) To move a file, be sure you are in the correct directory (or folder) on the Left Side , also known as your computer. Highlight the file name (shown in the example as 'index.html') by clicking on it once and click on the bottom arrow in between the two windows. This will move a copy of the file from your computer to the Right Side , or your individual space with localconnect.
8) Once the file transfer is complete, you will notice the Remote System window reloads itself, and you will now be able to see the file in the 'www' folder. Each additional file can be moved in the same manner.
